This chicken and dumplings recipe takes about thirty minutes from start to finish and serves up to six people.
Ingredients You’ll Need for Broccoli Cheddar Chicken and Dumplings
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup diced yellow onions
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 3 cups chicken broth
- 4 cups half and half
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 12 oz broccoli florets, chopped small
- 1 cup matchstick cut carrots ( I buy a bag of precut ones at the grocery store )
- 3 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
- 1 tube refrigerated biscuits ( I used a 12oz tube with 10 biscuits )
- 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Step by Step Instructions for Making Broccoli Cheddar Chicken and Dumplings
STEP 1:
To make these cheesy chicken and dumplings, I started by dropping some butter into a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
STEP 2:
Once the butter was melted I added some diced onions to the pot.
I stirred and cooked the diced onions until they were translucent.
STEP 3:
I added some all purpose flour to the pot.
I stirred well and continued cooking for about three minutes.
STEP 4:
I added some chicken broth to the pot.
I stirred the broth and flour mixture together until smooth.
STEP 5:
I added some half and half and stirred again.
STEP 6:
I added some onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper to the pot.
I stirred the seasonings into the broth mixture.
STEP 7:
I added some chopped broccoli florets to the pot.
I also added some matchstick carrots and shredded rotisserie chicken to the pot.
I stirred all of the ingredients together well and then brought the liquid to a boil.
STEP 8:
While I was waiting for the liquid to come to a boil, I opened a package of Pillsbury refrigerated biscuits.
I cut each biscuit into six pieces.
STEP 9:
Once the liquid was boiling, I added the biscuit pieces to the pot.
I stirred well.
STEP 10:
I placed a lid on the pot and reduced the heat to low.
I left the chicken and dumplings to simmer, stirring occasionally, for fifteen minutes.
STEP 11:
After fifteen minutes I removed the lid and stirred the chicken and dumplings well.
I turned off the heat and added some shredded cheddar cheese to the pot.
I stirred until the cheese was melted.
Then the cheesy broccoli chicken and dumplings were ready to scoop and serve.

- Add the flour to the pot and stir well. Continue cooking for 3 minutes.
- Add the chicken broth and stir well.
- Add the half and half and stir again.
- Add the onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper to the pot. Stir well.
- Add the chopped broccoli florets, matchstick carrots and shredded chicken to the pot. Stir well and bring the liquid to a boil.
- While waiting for the liquid to boil, opening the package of biscuits and cut each biscuit into six pieces.
- Once the liquid is boiling, add the biscuit pieces to the pot and stir well.
- Place a lid on the pot and reduce the heat to low. Leave the dish to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent anything from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- After 15 minutes, remove the lid and stir the contents well.
- Turn off the heat and add the shredded cheddar to the pot. Stir until the cheese is melted.
- Serve and enjoy!
