Can I make candied sweet potatoes ahead of time?

  • Yes! You can prepare and bake the sweet potatoes a day ahead, cover the baking dish, and refrigerate it. Reheat them covered in the oven at 350°F until heated through, giving them a gentle stir partway through.

Do I need to boil the sweet potatoes before baking?

  • No. The sweet potatoes go into the baking dish raw and cook until tender in the buttery maple brown sugar sauce.

Why do I need to stir the potatoes while they bake?

  • Stirring every 20 minutes helps coat all of the sweet potato slices in the glaze and encourages even cooking and caramelization.

How do I know when the candied sweet potatoes are done?

  • They’re ready when the slices are fork-tender and the butter, maple syrup, and brown sugar mixture has thickened into a glossy glaze.
