To make this casserole, I started by dumping a pound of lean ground beef into a large saute pan over medium-high heat along with a dab of margarine.
I added some diced onions to the pan with the ground beef as it was cooking.
I made sure to crumble the ground beef well.
Once the ground beef was fully cooked, I drained the excess grease from the pan and reduced the heat to medium-low.
Then I added some corn and black bean salsa, Heinz chili sauce, taco seasoing, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder to the pan.
I stirred until all of the ground beef was coated in the sauce.
Then I added some chopped green onions to the pan.
I stirred well again and turned off the heat.
I spread 12 slices of bread with margarine.
I cut all of the slices of bread in half.
Then I placed half of the bread slices, margarine side down, in a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
I sprinkled some shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of the bread.
Then I spooned the ground beef mixture on top of the cheese and spread it out evenly.
I sprinkled some more shredded cheese on top of the meat.
Then I placed the remaining bread slices, margarine side up, on top of the cheese.
I placed the baking dish in the oven and baked the casserole until the top bread slices were golden brown.
Then I removed the casserole from the oven and served it immediately.
This cheesy ground beef casserole has a bit of a kick from the taco seasoning but is not overly spicy.

- Once the ground beef is fully cooked, drain the excess grease from the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low.
- Add the salsa, chili sauce, taco seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder to the pan.
- Stir until all of the ground beef is coated in the sauce.
- Add the chopped green onions to the pan.
- Stir well and then turn off the heat.
- Spread margarine on all of the slices of the bread.
- Cut the slices of bread in half.
- Place half of the bread pieces, margarine side down, in a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle 2 cups of the shredded cheese on top of the bread.
- Scoop the ground beef mixture on top of the cheese and spread it out evenly.
- Sprinkle the remaing 2 cups of cheese on top of the ground beef.
