To make these scalloped potatoes, I started by cutting some white potatoes into approximately 1/8 inch slices using a mandoline slicer.

Then I dumped some butter into a pot on the stove over medium heat.

Once the butter was fully melted, I added some diced onions to the pot.

I stirred the onions and butter together well.

I continued cooking the diced onions until they were translucent.

Then I added some all purpose flour to the pot.

I stirred until the flour was fully combined with the butter and diced onions.

I continued cooking the flour mixture for a few minutes.

Then I added some chicken broth to the pot.

Then I added some milk to the pot.

I stirred well again.

I added some salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder to the pot.

I whisked the spices into the liquid well.

Then I left the sauce to continue cooking over medium heat just until it came to a boil.

As soon as the liquid started to boil, I removed the pot from the heat.

I sprayed a 9 x 13 inch baking dish well with cooking spray.

I placed half of the potato slices in the baking dish.

Then I poured half of the sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.

I placed the remaining potato slices on top of the sauce.

Then I poured the remaining sauce on top of the potatoes.

I covered the baking dish with aluminum foil and placed it in the oven.

I baked the potatoes, covered, for thirty-five minutes.

After thirty-five minutes I removed the foil.

Then I continued baking the potatoes, uncovered, until they were browning across the top.

I removed the dish from the oven and allowed the potatoes to cool slightly.

Then I scooped and served the potatoes.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make these Scalloped Potatoes:

  • 3 lbs white potatoes
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup diced yellow onions
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tbsp onion powder

How to Make Scalloped Potatoes:

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Cut the potatoes into 1/8 inch slices.
  3. Dump the butter into a large pot on the stove over medium heat.
  4. Once the butter is melted, add the diced onions to the pot and stir well.
  5. Continue cooking until the onions are translucent.
  6. Add the flour to the pot and stir well.
  7. Cook the flour mixture for 3 minutes.
  8. Add the chicken broth to the pot and stir well.
  9. Add the milk and stir well again.
  10. Add the salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder to the pot.
  11. Whisk the sauce well.
  12. Leave the sauce to continue cooking over medium heat just until it comes to a boil.
  13. As soon as the liquid starts to boil, remove the pot from the heat.
  14. Spray a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  15. Place half of the potato slices in the baking dish.
  16. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.
  17. Place the remaining potato slices on top of the sauce layer.
  18. Pour the remaining sauce over the potato slices.
  19. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  20. Place the dish in the oven and bake, covered, for 35 minutes.
  21. After 35 minutes remove the foil and continue baking until the potatoes are browning across the top. 30-35 minutes.
  22. Remove the dish from the oven and allow the potatoes to sit for a few minutes before scooping and serving.
