FAQS:

What goes well with these potatoes?

  • The best thing about these potatoes is that they’re so versatile and pair well with just about anything! You can pair them with your favorite kind of meat, serve them alongside other veggies, pair them with traditional breakfast food, or dip them in your favorite dipping sauce. You can’t go wrong!

Can I use different types of potatoes with this recipe?

  • You absolutely can! You might need to adjust the cooking time to make sure they are cooked through and can easily be smashed. If you use larger potatoes, you’ll need to cut them into halves or quarters.

How can I make my potatoes more crispy?

  • Mixing chickpea flour together with the other spices will give your potatoes that extra delicious crispiness. If you have time, you could also soak them in water for about 45 minutes to remove the excess starch. This will allow the skin to get super crispy as you air fry them.

Do I need to flip my potatoes halfway through the cook?

  • No, you don’t need to flip them but it’s a good idea to shake the air fryer basket. Make sure they are spaced out evenly in a single layer.

What’s the best way of storing my leftover smashed potatoes?

  • To store the smashed potatoes in the fridge, place potatoes in an airtight container or a ziploc bag, making sure you remove any extra air. The potatoes will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, just put them in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes. Steer clear of the microwave though. Reheating them in the microwave will make them smushy.

Can I freeze these crispy potatoes?

  • Yes. A great way to do this would be to put them on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer until they’re fully frozen. You can then toss them into a ziploc freezer bag or airtight container to store them in the freezer.

How should I reheat my frozen crispy air fryer smashed potatoes?

  • To reheat your frozen potatoes, simply put them in the air fryer at 400 degrees f for 4-5 minutes or until they are heated through. You’ll notice that they’re not as crispy, however.

Can I make this potato recipe ahead of time?

  • You certainly can! Just follow the cooking instructions up until you smash them. After smashing them, place them in an airtight container or use plastic wrap before storing them in the fridge for the next day. To cook them, simply air fry them at 400 degrees f for an additional 5-10 minutes or until they’re cooked through and crispy.

Do I need to boil potatoes before I air fry them?

  • Not if you’re using baby potatoes. You can just pre-cook them in the air fryer until they are tender and a fork can go through them. If you’re not using baby potatoes, you can boil your potatoes for 15-20 minutes, or put them in the instant pot for about 6 minutes.

Can I use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder for this recipe?

  • Yes, you can. I like using garlic powder because it’s quick and easy, but fresh minced garlic would be a great option as well.
