Ingredients You’ll Need to Make This Homemade Brown Gravy:

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef or chicken broth (low-sodium)
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Finely chopped fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

How to Make Brown Gravy:

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly to form a smooth roux. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the roux is a light golden color.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in the chopped onion and garlic. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onions are translucent and aromatic.
  3. Slowly pour in the beef or chicken broth while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. The roux will thicken as you whisk.
  4. Add the balsamic vinegar and Worcestershire sauce, mix until well combined. Taste and add more if you’d like a stronger flavor.
  5. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and let the gravy simmer gently for about 10-15 minutes. This helps the flavors develop and the gravy to thicken.
  7. If you prefer a smoother gravy, you can strain it through a fine mesh strainer to remove any onion or garlic bits. This step is optional and depends on your preference.
  8. Just before serving, you can garnish the gravy with fresh thyme or parsley for a pop of color and added flavor.
  9. Transfer the homestyle brown gravy to a gravy boat or serving dish.
  10. Serve it alongside roasted meat, mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, and other Holiday dishes.
  11. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Continuously taste your gravy while cooking and adjust the seasonings to your liking. Remember that flavors will intensify as the gravy simmers.
  • Control the thickness of your gravy by adding more or less broth or milk as needed. If it's too thick, add more liquid; if it's too thin, let it simmer longer to reduce and thicken.
  • Don't hesitate to add herbs and spices that you enjoy. Thyme, rosemary, sage, and a pinch of nutmeg are excellent choices for a Thanksgiving touch.
