To make these chicken and dumplings, I started by opening a package of Pillsbury refrigerated biscuits and cutting each one into four pieces.

Then I dumped some butter and diced onions into a large saucepan over medium-high heat.

I cooked the onions until they were translucent.

Then I added some flour to the pot and stirred it well to mix it with the butter and onions.

FAQS:

How should I store my chicken and dumplings with biscuits?

To store chicken and dumplings with biscuits, follow these steps:

  1. Allow the dish to cool: Let the chicken and dumplings cool down to room temperature before storing it. This helps prevent condensation and keeps the biscuits from becoming soggy.
  2. Divide into portions: If you have a large batch, divide the chicken and dumplings into individual portions or meal-sized servings. This makes it easier to reheat and serve later.
  3. Use airtight containers: Transfer the chicken and dumplings into airtight containers. Glass or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids work well. Alternatively, you can use resealable freezer bags.
  4. Layer the biscuits separately: To prevent the biscuits from getting mushy, store them separately from the chicken and dumplings. You can place them in a separate airtight container or ziplock bag.
  5. Label and date: Label each container with the contents and date of preparation. This helps you keep track of freshness and makes it easier to identify later.
  6. Refrigerate or freeze: If you plan to consume the chicken and dumplings within the next couple of days, store them in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh for 3-4 days. If you want to store them for a longer duration, freeze them instead.
  7. Reheating: When you’re ready to enjoy your chicken and dumplings, reheat them gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Heat the biscuits separately to ensure they stay crisp.

By following these steps, you can store your chicken and dumplings with biscuits properly, maintaining their flavor and texture for future meals.

What substitutions could I make?

When making easy chicken and dumplings with biscuits, you can make several substitutions based on your dietary preferences, ingredient availability, or personal taste. Here are a few common substitutions you can consider:

  1. Chicken: If you prefer a different protein or are vegetarian/vegan, you can substitute the chicken with tofu, seitan, or cooked chickpeas. Alternatively, you can use boneless, skinless chicken thighs or turkey instead of chicken breast for a richer flavor.
  2. Broth: The recipe calls for chicken broth, but you can use vegetable broth or mushroom broth as a vegetarian/vegan option. If you don’t have broth on hand, you can also use bouillon cubes or base mixed with water.
  3. Vegetables: The recipe includes carrots and peas. Feel free to add or substitute with other vegetables like corn, celery, green beans, or diced potatoes. You can also use frozen vegetables if fresh ones are not available.
  4. Herbs and spices: Adjust the herbs and spices to suit your taste. For example, you can add thyme or rosemary for additional flavor. If you like a bit of heat, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
  5. Biscuits: If you prefer a different type of biscuit or have dietary restrictions, you can try using gluten-free biscuit mix or Bisquick

Remember to make adjustments based on the specific substitutions you choose. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed to ensure the flavors complement each other. Have fun experimenting and customizing the recipe to your liking!

What sides should I serve with chicken and dumplings?

When serving chicken and dumplings, you can pair it with a variety of sides to create a well-rounded and satisfying meal. Here are some popular side dish options that complement chicken and dumplings:

  1. Green salad: A fresh and crisp green salad with a light vinaigrette dressing provides a refreshing contrast to the rich and comforting flavors of chicken and dumplings.
  2. Steamed vegetables: Serve a side of steamed vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, or green beans, to add some nutritious elements to the meal. The vibrant colors and tender-crisp texture of steamed vegetables can balance out the dish.
  3. Roasted vegetables: Roasting vegetables like Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, or sweet potatoes can bring out their natural sweetness and add a delightful caramelized flavor to the meal.
  4. Cornbread: Cornbread is a classic side that pairs well with chicken and dumplings. Its slightly sweet and crumbly texture complements the savory flavors and adds another layer of comfort to the meal.
  5. Biscuits: Since you already have dumplings in the main dish, serving some extra biscuits on the side is a delightful choice. They can be used to soak up the flavorful broth or enjoyed separately.
  6. Mashed potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes can be a comforting and hearty side dish that complements the chicken and dumplings. The creamy texture and mild flavor of mashed potatoes work well with the rich and flavorful sauce.
  7. Rice or quinoa: If you prefer to have an additional grain-based side, consider serving steamed rice or quinoa. These options can help soak up the sauce and add a bit of variety to the meal.

Remember, these suggestions are just starting points, and you can mix and match based on your personal preferences and dietary needs. Feel free to get creative and explore different combinations to find the perfect sides for your chicken and dumplings.

This recipe is a favorite in my home! I recommend adding the chicken AFTER the biscuits/dumplings are fully cooked. The chicken did burn in my pot while I let the biscuits sit with a lid on top as it cooked. If you’re not good at shredding chicken like me LOL just cut the chicken in cubes it was easier for me and I could taste the chicken more!

This recipe was great and easy to follow! I added almost 4x the pepper because we love a peppery chicken and dumplings! I also did what another commenter said and didn't do 4 cups of cream because of the amount of fat, but I subbed two cups of milk and did two cups of cream. It was amazing. I love reviews that include pictures of the cooking process.

I'm making chicken and dumplings as an extra dish to go along with our traditional Christmas dinner. I like onions carrots and celery in mine, no peas. Because several family members don't want any veggies in theirs I cooked my chicken in broth with onion celery and carrots, but strained the broth to get the vegetables out. I really hated doing that but to please my family I did. Actually I believe that's the traditional southern chicken and dumplings.

Made this tonight. Only had 2 cups of cream and that was ok because 4 is a lot! Added 4 cups of milk. I also added in celery and carrots with the onions to sauté. Overall, super delicious and a hit with every member of the family including a husband who won’t eat things like chicken and noodles or chicken a la king and a son who won’t eat anything that resembles soup.
