To make this beef and rice dish, I started by cutting some steak into half inch pieces.
I heated some oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Once the oil was hot I added the steak to the pot.
I stirred and continued cooking until the steak was browned on all sides.
Then I added some diced onions to the pot.
STEP 3:
I cooked the onions until they were tender.
Then I added some minced garlic to the pot and continued cooking for one minute.
STEP 4:
I dumped a can of cream of mushroom soup, water and garlic salt into a mixing bowl.
I mixed the ingredients together well.
STEP 5:
I poured the soup mixture over the steak in the pot.
I stirred well and brought the mixture to a simmer and then reduced the heat to low.
STEP 6:
I covered the pot and left it to simmer, stirring occasionally, for 45 minutes.
STEP 7:
While the steak was simmering I cooked some white rice.

How should I store the steak and rice?
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. It’s recommended to keep them in separate containers to retain their freshness.
What can I serve this over instead of rice?
Instead of serving the steak over rice, this recipe also works great over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.
What are substitutions that I can make?
If you don’t have garlic salt, use ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and ¾ teaspoon salt. Also, if you don’t want pieces of onion, 1-2 teaspoons of onion powder can be used.
Steak and Rice
Steak and Rice is a hearty comfort food dish with tender pieces of steak cooked in a creamy mushroom sauce and served over rice.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 pound thin cut bottom round steak or London broil, cut into ½-inch pieces
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
- ½ cup water
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt
- Chopped parsley for garnish
- 2-3 cups hot, cooked rice for serving
Instructions
- Into a dutch or cast iron skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the steak to the skillet; stir and heat until browned on all sides.
- Add the onion and sauté until tender (1-2 minutes).
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the soup, water, and garlic salt; pour over the meat and mix well.
- Bring to a simmer and reduce heat to low.
- Cover and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes or until the meat is tender. Be sure to scrape the bottom of the skillet when stirring to prevent sticking.
- Serve over hot, cooked rice and garnish with chopped parsley.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- If the gravy is too thick for your liking after cooking, slowly add water and mix well until the desired consistency is reached.
- The steak should be thin (about ⅛ inch) in order for it to become tender in that amount of cooking time. Additional cooking time would be required for thicker pieces.
- If you like more gravy and less meat, use ½ lb. of steak or double the gravy.
