To make this spicy Chinese chicken, I started by dumping some corn starch into a large mixing bowl.

I added some white vinegar to the bowl.

I also added some soy sauce to the bowl.

Then I added some chicken broth and brown sugar to the bowl.

I whisked all of the ingredients together well and set the bowl aside.

Then I chopped some boneless, skinless chicken breasts into bite sized pieces.

I cracked two eggs into a large mixing bowl.

I beat the eggs well.

Then I dumped the chicken breast chunks into the bowl with the eggs.

I stirred until all of the chicken breast pieces were coated in egg.

Then I added some corn starch to the bowl.

I stirred until all of the chicken chunks were well coated in the corn starch and egg mixture.

I heated some sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Once the oil was hot, I added some of the chicken breast chunks to the pan.

I cooked the chicken for 3-4 minutes, until the bottoms were golden brown.

Then I flipped the chicken pieces.

I cooked the chicken for an additional 3-4 minutes until both sides were golden brown.

Then I transferred the cooked chicken pieces to a paper towel lined plate.

I cooked the chicken pieces in four batches.

I added some additional sesame oil to the pan between each batch.

Once all of the chicken was cooked, I added some minced ginger and garlic puree to the skillet that the chicken was cooked in.

I stirred the ginger and garlic together.

Then I grabbed the bowl with the prepared sauce mixture.

I whisked the mixture well one last time and then poured it into the skillet.

I whisked well as the sauce came to a simmer and thickened.

Then I added some chili flakes to the pan.

I whisked the chili flakes into the sauce.

Then I reduced the heat to low and left the sauce to continue thickening for five minutes.

After five minutes I added the cooked chicken to the pan.

I stirred until all of the chicken was coated in sauce.

I added some chopped green onions and sesame seeds to the pan.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make This Empress Chicken:

  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp corn starch
  • 3 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 eggs, large
  • 7 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tbsp garlic puree
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

How to Make Empress Chicken:

  1. Dump 2 tbsp of the cornstarch into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the vinegar, soy sauce, chicken broth and brown sugar to the bowl.
  3. Whisk all of the ingredients together well and set the bowl aside.
  4. Cut the chicken breasts into bite sized pieces.
  5. Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl.
  6. Beat the eggs well.
  7. Add the chicken pieces to the bowl with the beaten eggs.
  8. Stir until all of the chicken pieces are coated in egg.
  9. Add the cup of corn starch to the bowl.

  11. Pour 4 tbsp of the sesame oil into a large skillet over medium heat.
  12. Once the oil is hot, add a quarter of the chicken pieces to the skillet.
  13. Cook the chicken for 3-4 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.
  14. Flip the chicken pieces and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until both sides are golden brown.
  15. Transfer the cooked chicken pieces to a paper towel lined plate.
  16. Cook the remaining chicken in 3 more batches adding an additional tbsp of sesame oil to the skillet before each batch.
  17. Once all of the chicken is cooked add ginger and garlic to the skillet the chicken was cooked in.
  18. Stir the garlic and ginger together.
  19. Grab the bowl with the prepared sauce mixture, whisk it well and then pour it into the skillet.
  20. Whisk the sauce as it simmers and thickens.
  21. Add the chili flakes to the skillet and whisk well.
  22. Reduce the heat to low and leave the sauce to continue thickening for 5 minutes.
  23. After 5 minutes, add the cooked chicken pieces to the skillet.
  24. Stir until all of the chicken pieces are coated in sauce.
  25. Add the chopped green onions and sesame seeds to the skillet.
  26. Stir again.
