FAQS:

How should I store sour cream mashed potatoes?

Store these mashed potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat in the microwave, adding a little more milk or water as needed to return the potatoes to a creamy consistency.

What substitutions could I make?

Sour cream mashed potatoes are delicious and versatile, and you can make several substitutions based on your dietary preferences or ingredient availability. Here are some substitutions you could consider:

  1. Sour Cream:
    • Greek yogurt: This is a popular and healthier alternative that provides creaminess and a tangy flavor similar to sour cream.
    • Buttermilk: It adds a tangy flavor and creaminess to the mashed potatoes.
    • Cream cheese: This can add richness and creaminess to the potatoes.
  2. Potatoes:
    • Russet potatoes: These are commonly used for mashed potatoes due to their high starch content and fluffiness.
    • Red potatoes: These have a smoother texture and can add a slightly different flavor profile to the dish.
  3. Flavor Additions:
    • Herbs: Experiment with fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or rosemary to add extra flavor.
    • Garlic: Roasted or sautéed garlic can give your mashed potatoes a wonderful depth of flavor.
    • Cheese: Consider adding grated cheese like cheddar, parmesan, or Gruyère for a cheesy twist.
    • Mustard: A touch of Dijon mustard can add a subtle tang and depth of flavor.
  4. Dairy-Free Options:
    • Plant-based yogurt: Use non-dairy yogurt made from almond, coconut, or soy as a sour cream substitute.
    • Nutritional yeast: This can add a cheesy flavor to the potatoes, making them more savory.
    • Olive oil or vegan butter: For creaminess and richness without dairy.
  5. Low-Fat Options:
    • Low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt: These options can reduce the overall fat content while still providing creaminess.
    • Low-fat milk or almond milk: Use these instead of milk for a lighter consistency.
  6. Healthier Options:
    • Cauliflower: Mix in steamed and mashed cauliflower to add nutrition and reduce the carb content.
    • Sweet potatoes: For a different twist, use mashed sweet potatoes or a combination of sweet and regular potatoes.

When substituting ingredients, keep in mind that the flavor and texture might vary slightly from traditional sour cream mashed potatoes, but experimenting can lead to new and delicious combinations. Adjust quantities and seasonings as needed to achieve your desired taste and consistency.

Notes

  • This recipe is also great with Russet potatoes.
  • The most important part of this recipe is cooking the potatoes until they are fall-apart tender. If the potatoes are undercooked, they will be lumpy and hard to mash. They won’t get the creamy consistency that is so delicious in this recipe!
  • These potatoes store well! Make them ahead, and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat in the microwave, adding a little more milk or water as needed to return the potatoes to a creamy consistency.
